What would change your conclusion?
Try a higher delivery cost or a smaller average reduction in suffering. With everything else fixed, doubling cost halves the modeled benefit. A small gap between two estimates may disappear under modest changes.
What could make relief go further? Put approaches side by side, change their assumptions and see what matters to the result.
An exploratory calculator using our published models. WSI does not collect donations through this website.
For an illustrative $100, the published central scenarios estimate about 9.6 USU averted through malaria prevention and 7.3 USU relieved through fistula repair. They cover different experiences and time periods, so these numbers are not a charity ranking.
Enable JavaScript to choose approaches and adjust assumptions. The full reports and downloadable inputs work without it.
USU combines the number helped, duration and intensity of relief. One USU uses a stipulated kidney-stone episode as its reference. It is a proposed common unit, not a validated equivalence between conditions.
Choose at least one approach above to see its estimate.
| Approach | Estimated USU reduced | Other modeled outcome | Benefit window | Spending basis | Deaths prevented |

Fractional outcomes are expected or accounting equivalents across a program, not fractions of a person treated. Deaths prevented are shown separately. “Unestimated” means the model does not quantify the outcome, not that it is zero.
Open an approach to adjust its inputs. Changes update the comparison above and the result within each panel. You can return to the published central inputs at any time.
Intensity uses the WSI 0–10 scale. Values describe averages across the counted hours, including sleep and periods of relief. Cost allowances and intensity assignments remain provisional even where studies inform them.

These estimates cover different people, harms and benefit windows. Most show gross relief; the eye-pain model also subtracts an assumed recovery burden. None measures complete net benefit. Check the full analysis before using a result to guide support.
The default inputs reproduce each report’s central scenario. Changing the amount scales that model; it does not establish a current funding gap or an organization’s ability to use more money at the same rate.
Benefit windows stay within the published scope. You can shorten counted exposure, but this does not automatically lower the cost of a complete treatment course. This calculator does not extrapolate relief indefinitely or estimate probabilities for your custom inputs.
All six models use p = 1 and 47.25 intensity-hours per USU. Death itself, lost life-years and bereavement are outside these calculations. For malaria, the fatal course replaces the ordinary course for fatal cases.
Custom scenarios are calculated in your browser. Downloaded scenarios include the inputs, formulas and model versions; shared links restore the selected inputs in this calculator version.
